Introduction to Gundam Gates and Posting Rules

Welcome to Gundam Gates!

First and foremost, we are a Community-Based Interactive Role-Playing Game. This means that the board's story is manipulated by the actions of the players. By joining here and creating an original character, we hope you can find a spot in the community that fits you, and contribute your imagination to the growth of the story. In turn, we want you to interact with other roleplayers, and gain satisfaction from watching your actions shape the story around you.

Secondly, the board's focus lies in theMobile Suit Gundam metaseries from Japan. Originally created in 1979 by Sunrise and Yoshiyuki Tomino, it has since then turned into a cultural phenomenon; the 'Star Wars' of Japan. While a knowledge of Gundam certainly helps in roleplaying, it is not required. The similarities between the Gundam metaverse and Gundam Gates are three-fold: the primary form of combat is with large robots, or mecha, the mecha used on the board are taken from the massive selection that's built from the 29 years of Gundam series, and the evolved forms of humanity showcased in Gundam is also carried over here. Past that, however, Gundam Gates deviates from its namesake. The Gundam Gates story is entirely unique, and a larger setting allows for greater interaction between a much larger cast; namely, the players. However, what is most important is that anyone with a want to roleplay can participate here; no prior knowledge is required, although it helps!

Chat Room

Unlike many forum based communities, Gundam Gates revolves heavily around our Chat Room, a Discord channel which you can reach using Discord, or the web client. Most out-of-character chatter and interaction takes place here, and it's a good way to get to know the rest of the community. It's also often the quickest way to get questions answered, especially by a member of the administrative team.

What is a role playing game?

If you've found us, you probably have an idea already, but in short this board is a collaborative storytelling effort between different people, structured around a few guidelines to keep things running smoothly. Character interaction and development are key; there is no regulated monetary system to keep track of, resources are kept track of only in the broadest terms to allow for freedom of play. Most importantly, while we use the term Role Playing Game, it is usually not a competitive experience, it is a collaborative one; even if your characters are at each others throats, the players should all be having fun.

At the most basic level, two or more players take turns posting replies to one another in a thread, creating a story between them as they narrate their characters' actions in the third person. Examples can be found in any of the roleplaying areas on the board, but if you are confused, feel free to ask for assistance. There are no hard and fast limits on post length,
the minimum is as much as is needed to express what is happening and what your character is doing. Conversely there is no maximum size for a single post but purple prose may make your writing more confusing than enriched and leave your partner with a hard time replying to you!

Most in-character threads are one of three main types:

Character threads, which are when two or more players have their characters interact. While you do not know how the thread might progress, it is often a good idea to discuss with the other player in advance what you are both looking for your characters to get out of whatever occurs, be it a raging Mobile Suit duel, a bar brawl, or a walk in the park.

Group Conflicts are what they sound like; members from two (or more!) factions taking up arms against one another, usually over possessions or territory. The most common version of this is a Raid, which is a small skirmish, often with the attackers seeking to steal supplies or goods from the defenders. Note that not all instances of characters from different factions fighting are automatically one of these; sometimes people will get into fights for entirely personal reasons. Generally involvement in a Group Conflict requires a character to be an active participant in a Mobile Weapon of some kind, but this is not always the case; if your civilian character has a reason to be there, their perspective is as valid a part of the overall story as anyone else's.

Events are threads run by staff or community members with the express purpose of adding something to the overall story, and having other people engage in it. Usually this means they will control a cast of "Non-Player-Characters" (NPCs), and will set the scene for the other participants as well as controlling any antagonists and the like. Not all Events involve combat, and not all combat Events involve Mobile Weapons, but they are usually potentially dangerous, with some kind of reward for participation.
Nearly all character interaction on Gates can be defined as one of these. Importantly, while Group Conflicts and Events may be decisive points for the storyline as a whole, this does not mean that character threads are insignificant in any way. Indeed, the other two types of thread are often birthed from the occurrences in a character thread.

For returning players:

You may notice a few changes! We strongly recommend any old hands check out every part of the new rules and regulations, as the board evolves with each incarnation, like a Time Lord. Many familiar faces are still around, as well as new ones. Older players in particular may wish to look to past storylines as inspiration for new characters or bring back old favourites, but you are just as welcome to create something totally new.

Basic Writing Rules

Post by Omni » Fri Feb 02, 2018 12:57 am

1) 'God Moding' is a derogatory term for when a player narrates the actions of another player's characters, or the effects of their own actions upon characters not belonging to them. This could be as innocent as having them walk into a store with your character, or as egregious as narrating their bloody, violent death; either way, don't do it.

2) While there is no hard limit on the number of threads a character can be in, and while the flow of time is not always entirely linear with regards to when threads are started in the real world, common sense and discretion are appreciated. After all, it is hard to have a sense of character development if you're writing their past and present at the exact same time! Please try and avoid creating time paradoxes, they get messy. As a rule of thumb, three or four is probably a good limit for a single character, and if you are expecting a major change in your character's life to occur in any thread, it is best not to be writing anything set later until it is resolved.

3) Such an open system relies on a lot of trust between players, and players and staff. Please do not abuse it.

4) Unless agreed to by all parties, please do not post out of turn. This can make it awkward for other players to reply otherwise.

Basic Character Rules

Post by Omni » Fri Feb 02, 2018 12:59 am

1) There are two types of characters:Player Characters (PCs) and Non-Player-Characters (NPCs). In short, a PC is your main character for interacting with the story, and all PCs are bound by various rules and guidelines to keep the experience fun for everyone. NPCs are effectively plot devices to get parts of the story from point A to point B; they are antagonists, minor characters, extras, et cetera.

2) You may have as many characters as you feel you have the time to fully develop. One PC is a good start for new players, after which a second can be created once comfortable, etc. NPCs generally get less development than PCs, the main guideline as far as they are concerned is that you should not have more NPCs than you actually use, especially if you have plots involving them with peoples' PCs. In other words, have fun but don't leave other people hanging.

3) Player Character signups must use this form here (link). NPC signups do not need to do so, but you may find it useful to fill out some or all of this information for major NPCs.

4) While our current Storyline references previous ones, no in-depth knowledge of these is needed. A glossary of groups can be found here (link) for the curious, but any character in their early 20s will have only ever known the current timeline.

5) Custom Mobile Suits are allowed (though not recommended for new players), as detailed here (link)

6) While you may see a few names that seem familiar, characters of all kinds should be as original as possible. The same goes for custom Mobile Weapons.

7) Any units taken which use an original GN Drive come supplied with a Tau Drive instead, as there are a finite number of GN Drives in the storyline. In addition, AD units from the Gundam 00 movie are currently not allowed for use, nor are 5th-Generation Mobile Suits (Turn A), Photon Battery equipped units (G Reconguista), and there is a finite number of PD Gundam machines (Iron Blooded Orphans).

8) Generally speaking, new characters will start at the low end of the spectrum in terms of any superhuman abilities they might have (Newtypes, Gundam Fighters, et cetera). The idea is that you get the opportunity to develop them through their actions and interactions with other players. Returning characters may be developed a reasonable amount from their last appearance.

Basic Combat Rules

Post by Omni » Fri Feb 02, 2018 12:59 am

While not the be all and end all of roleplaying on the board, you can easily imagine how a story involving giant war mecha will eventually involve combat. The usual rules apply, but these additional rules are for those combat situations in particular.

1) In a combat thread, especially Events or Group Conflicts, if your opponent has not responded within 48 hours of your last post, you may invoke the "48 hour rule" to keep things moving. This means you can claim a victory, in the case of a one-on-one fight, or in a multi-player thread it means writing them out of the thread and moving on (though it is usually polite to try and contact them first!). You are allowed to write them out in any reasonable fashion (usually a simple retreat), and/or write a short epilogue for your own character, though causing character death is unacceptable.

2) The effects of actions upon a character are almost exclusively to be narrated by their player, except where it is an additional consequence that their player was unaware of (for example, a blade being poisoned, or shells being explosive). Even in these cases it is preferred that the players communicate OOC for clarity.

3) In the case of systems or abilities which somehow grant power over another character or their Mobile Weapon, they can never be used to force the death of a Player Character.

Basic Technology Rules

Post by Omni » Fri Feb 02, 2018 1:01 am

Because Gundam Gates throws everything Gundam into a blender, concepts and technologies interact in ways that they were never intended to when designed. Most Gundam series have roughly analogous concepts to one another, but sometimes the differences are confusing. Here is a list of guides for how these things work out, as far as we're concerned.

1) Beam weapons: Weapons and defences from one technological base work as well against those from others as their own. However they retain any specific functionality they originally had, such as Hyperion Gundam's weapons being able to shoot from inside its own barrier. Importantly, the plasma and electromagnetic field based weapons which would be disrupted by GN or Minovsky particles are considered to work as normal.

2) VSBR and similar weapons penetrate GN Fields, Lightwave Barriers, Minovksy Barriers as well as beam shields of all types, while anti-beam coated weapons can penetrate them but must be forced through and can be damaged by prolonged contact.

3) Innovades/Innovators and Newtypes operate almost identically but using separate kinds of enhancement. The potential is there for interaction and development but we leave this at the discretion of players; perhaps most importantly Quantum Brainwave users do not necessarily generate Pressure for Newtypes and Psycowaves do not disrupt QBWs.

4) N-Jammers only affect Nuclear Fission reactors, and are therefore of relatively limited utility (though they do prevent Nuclear warheads from detonating). Neutron Stampeders also only affect Fission weapons.

5) All Mobile Suits are assumed to operate with the assistance of some kind of Quantum Computer, and the software can be customized/modified accordingly; also, Mirage Colloid Viruses et al are assumed to work universally.

6) GN solid blades are roughly as strong as a standard beam saber, and one does not cut through the other as a rule. However they will be slowly cut through by Zanber type weapons or other high powered beam sabers. GN Condenser blades will not.

7) Nano-laminate equipped units will be subject to losing defensive effectiveness with repeated strikes from standard beam weapons, just as they do from their solid equivalents.

As with most things, if you have a question about technology not mentioned here, discuss it in the chat and we will come up with a solution.

Glossary of RP Terms

Post by Omni » Thu Feb 08, 2018 10:42 pm

Story-related:
  • Faction - A player-created organisation, consisting of multiple Player Characters. They may, as a collective, hold territory, possess Mass-Produced Mobile Weapons, Ships, et cetera and will utilize NPCs to fill out its roster and give more opportunities for others to interact with it. Usually, the Player of their leading PC is also the OOC 'leader' of the group. Players seeking to have a character join a faction should contact this person first. A list of Factions can be found here.
  • Government - A major organization within the storyline, a more powerful equivalent to modern-day nations. They are larger entities within the story than Factions, at least in terms of size and power; Most can be joined by PCs openly, others cannot. Governments, like Factions, often have one or two OOC 'leaders' that drive the direction of the group with its participants. A list of Government-level groups can be found here.
  • In-Character (IC) - Anything meant to be within the context of the story, i.e. from the viewpoint and knowledge of the characters. Any roleplaying post is expected to be IC, and the player should not incorporate things a character does not know when writing them.
  • Non-Player Character (NPC) - A character controlled by a story guide for the sake of presenting and moving the plot of various storylines, often through interactions with PCs. NPCs have few expectations, as they can be used in various ways for the sake of the plot.
  • Player Character (PC) - A character controlled solely by an individual player who participates in the story. They are both experiencing the story and driving it through their actions. PCs are expected to have a pivotal role in storylines involving them, big and small.
(Note: The lines between PCs and NPCs have blurred in the stories current state, but a PC is still considered to be more of a primary participant vs. an NPC)
  • Past Storyline - As the current story on Gates incorporates a multitude of past iterations coming together, this is usually said in reference to any of those older ones. Within the story these are often considered past 'worlds' or 'timelines.' A list of the Past Storylines and how they effect the current one can be found here.
  • Personal Storyline - A story that is focused around a single character; this is often used to describe the story of an individual PC as they interact with others and participate in larger storylines. Players are encouraged to update the status of their personal storylines with summaries or thread listings.
  • Out-of-Character (OOC) - Anything outside of the context of the story. This is often used to bring up general story knowledge that the characters may not be privy to. This is also used to describe non-roleplaying posts in the general discussion forums. Most OOC interaction occurs in the Chat Room.
  • Storyline - Used in two ways: one, for referencing the entire story of Gates in general, and secondly as any of the plot lines going on within the broader story. A list of storylines can be found here.
  • Story Guide/DM - Anyone who is 'running' or directing a storyline larger in scope than a personal one. This can still be quite small, but will generally involve a thought-out plot that other participants are not privy to. There is no 'right' way to run a storyline, as it is up to the one running it to go with their own preferences.

Glossary of Advanced Race Terms

Post by Omni » Thu Feb 08, 2018 10:50 pm

  • SEED mode -The Superior Evolutionary Element Destined-factor is an extraordinarily rare genetic combination which has been brought to the fore with the genetic engineering Coordinators undergo. In practice, what it means is a temporary mental state that can awaken in times of need, allowing the user to achieve otherwise impossible goals. In the context of Mobile Suit combat, this expresses itself as superior reaction time and ability to perform complex manoeuvres.
  • Hyper Mode - The pinnacle of a Gundam Fighter's abilities, where they have mastered control of both their life energy and their own heart. Characterized by a golden glow of energy about their person, invoking the Hyper Mode involves surpassing their own limits and reaching a truly superhuman level of ability. In addition to generally enhanced physical capabilities, they are able to perform even greater feats if Ki manipulation during this time, leading to more devastating or complicated attacks. Hyper Mode can also refer to the Newtype phenomenon when a Psychic Communicator causes an extreme reaction due to a pilot's emotional stress and attracts particles.
  • Innovade -Similar to Coordinators, they are another kind of genetically enhanced humanoid, designed from the ground up rather than modified in utero and then mod. Generally displaying superior physical attributes to a "normal"human, the most important modifications involve the ability to utilize Quantum Brainwaves, which allow them to interface with specific machinery and enhance their reflexes and cognition, in addition to forms of telepathic communication. In addition to this, their aging process is controlled and they are therefore functionally immortal, barring external trauma. Rumour has it some are even able to cheat death by transferring their consciousness from their mortal shell as it expires.
  • Quantum Brainwaves - People who can use these are generally graded from A-C, with C level being basic enhanced reflexes, and limited potential for communication with another user on a similar wavelength. Innovades are generally B grade, and an Innovator who develops fully is an A class user.
  • Pressure - The term used to describe the sensation Newtypes feel in one anothers' presence when they encounter another's Psycowaves, especially when antagonistic to one another. Generally, the more powerful the Newtype's abilities, the stronger the pressure, though it can increase massively at times of extreme stress or emotion.
