Bitter Reunion (Biggs)

The coastal city was a small and typically peaceful place. It was the kind of place people either lived in for most of their lives or moved to in order to escape the lives they'd once had. Small streets wound through single and two story buildings, shop fronts, and the occasional park before terminating at a long stretch of idyllic beach that was both tourist attraction and life source. On one end, around a corner and out of sight of anyone visiting the 'official' public beaches, a cannery churned out enough outgoing product to keep the town alive. Tourism had come later and transformed what had once been a fishing village into the quaint town it had become. But something had changed recently, swept through like an icy wind and a raging inferno. Ice covered some of the buildings and refused to melt, buildings had been blasted away, and streets had been torn down to the rock beneath. Less noticeable but far more eerie was the simple fact that there were no people around. No emergency workers responding to the damage, no concerned citizens or enraged property owners. The entire town had become a ghost town, the sounds of cars and conversation replaced with a foreboding wind washing out over the sea and the almost anxious cries of seagulls.

Victoria stood on the last section of paved road before it transitioned into the sandy trails crossing the beach and looked out at the city with unfocused hazel eyes. The woman could have been a statue with how little she had moved over the four hours since her arrival. The sea breeze pushed the loose fabric of her shirt out in front of her and tugged at the denim of her jeans and she didn't even acknowledge the distraction by blinking. The empty sleeve on her left arm flapped gently, pinned up at the elbow, and battered the hard plastic storage tube strapped across her back to add the faint sound of its impact to the strange ambiance of the moment. Grey hair so pale it bordered on silver fell across her face and tickled her nose but the Gundam Fighter had, for the moment, moved beyond the distraction.

Meditation was an interesting if inexact practice. Most people used it to center themselves and Victoria was no exception to that use of the various exercises. But rather than focus inward, she had been focusing outward as each minute of her four hour vigil stretched on. Her mind guided her ki out into the city like fine tendrils, each one guiding itself, as she sought for what could cause such devastation. They had expanded at a slow, steady rate with Victoria at its center like a spider in a web. Her eyes opened slowly as she felt the first stirrings of something familiar and they widened into genuine shock as her right hand closed into a tight fist.

"No," she breathed, the quiet denial lost in the wind.
