"Now rot."

These words came as he hunched over, joining the golden clasp of the shoe around her ankle. She bent forward in admiration of the shoe, a spartan affair of gold chain that bound her to a leather sole. Unsure if the source of the words came from within or without, she pursed her lips, hesitating before letting the words fade away.

"It's a lovely fit, isn't it?"
"Yes, like they were fashioned with you in mind."
"Hmmmmmm..."

She looked out the window, admiring the setting sun reflecting off the building across the street. The orange light shaved everyone who walked along the street into silhouettes of black scurrying from the glare, each with a finite destination. The man remained hunched, fastening the other shoe. One of the figures stopped in the window, staring in with hesitation before briskly turning back towards his original path. She shook her foot, the gold chains ringing with a deadened weight. She could feel the man smile.

"You always expect gold to sound lighter, more vibrant."
"Yes, and the plated ones do, cores of steel and copper. That sound carries the weight of authenticity."

He stood with a fluid motion that brushed the wrinkles from his pants and buttoned his suit. He gave a single empathetic clap as he smiled down at her feet. She stood, tottering briefly due to the awkward closeness between the man and her. Stabilizing her with a soft grip, he steered her to the closest mirror to admire the simplicity and grace of the shoe's grasp upon her.

"A fit worthy of a queen."
She smiled. She wasn't sure why she smiled.
"Will you be taking these home with you, miss?"
"Naturally, place them on my line of credit."
"Of course, miss, and your old shoes?"
"Please dispose of them."

He nodded with grace as she exited the storefront, joining the teeming multitudes of blackened figures pressing their ways downtown. A bubble of space surrounded her, the others like an impure haze incapable of touching her. She could see the city unfold beneath her, an endless grid of branches and avenue gilded in an afternoon sun that seemed to sink with her every step. The wind picked up around her ankles, her shoes ringing with a dull empathy. The sun blinked, but none seemed to mind.

She had been waiting among a small crowd of people at a crosswalk when she first noticed the man. Across the street with deep sunken eyes that set upon her as soon as she approached the curb. Like her, the crowd of shades that he was immersed in seemed to give him berth, she thought of the way a school of fish will swim around a predator. She found herself staring. She found him staring at her. The light changed and they passed each other uninterrupted.

On the next street, she stopped to stare at a dress in a shop window when she found his face in the reflection. Across the street again, where everything else in the window blurred with streaks of orange interspersed with the blackened outline of trees, his face stood stark and prominent, eyes buried deep in the back of her skull. Without giving him any outward acknowledging gesture, she stepped into the store.

"Please miss, you're going to be late," the woman was pressing the fern green dress into her arms, pushing her towards the back of the store. Startled at first by a crash she heard coming from the glass lined lobby behind her, she acquiesced to the woman's proddings, stepping through the dressing room doors. She tripped on a root, falling forward and landing among a snow draped forest.

Her fingers dug into the snow as she pressed herself back up. She brushed a small cascade of powder from the dress before most of it could melt, leaving only a small patch that succumbed to a darker green. Her toes dug into the snow and roots as she steadied herself and calmly cast her gaze around her. The forest was broken up by large drifts of snow that brought the pine trees boughs down around her, creating channels and curtains through which the denizens wove. Footsteps surrounded her, waltzing paths and highways into unseen reaches of the forest. A large slamming noise echoed from over head, drawing her attention. She looked up, seeing a wedge of the moon peak through the treetops. The moon blinked. She looked back into the forest and began to walk forward.

"So where were we again?"
"The forest."
Laughter, a cloud of balmy smoke.
"Right."
"You ok there?"
More laughter, another cloud of balmy smoke.
"Better than ever, we're here, right?"
A mating pair of sighs issued from them.
"What do we do anyways?"
The sound of fabric rubbing against skin as one shrugged.
"Wait and see?"
A lone, sterile sigh.
"Where we again?"
"The forest."

The door crept open through the darkness, the dullest grind of old wood on old wood spinning with each step. The slow hum of a diesel engine purred on the streets below, the man stepped through the threshold, closing the door behind him. He heard the jingle of chain at the far end of the room, the diesel engine getting louder with each step. He swallowed, fumbling through his pockets and extracting a leash. The diesel engines growl thrummed through the room, windows shaking as a streak of light sliced through the room. He saw it's outline. He swallowed louder. A baseline growl became audible. Hidden beneath the engine, he had missed it until the truck had rolled away. He stopped, knowing now he never had the element of surprise.

"Wouldn't what?"
Balmy smoke, laughter.
"Well if you're gonna..."
"Gonna what?"
Fingertips running against fabric in an idle pattern.
"Well?"
"Not a well. The other direction. A mound."
"I'm not sure," the voice trailed off.
Laughter.
